The combined passions of renowned art dealer Nicky Ginsberg and award-winning restaurateur Piera Potter have created one of Sydney's most tantalising new ventures of recent times - Mission.
Mission is aptly named for the Sydney City Missionaries who first occupied the 19th Century building. A spectacular Gothic Revival-style church in Sydney's Chippendale, the space has been remodelled by architect Jason Blake to perfectly accommodate Ginsberg and Potter's feast of sensory pleasure.
Upstairs, Ginsberg's NG Art Gallery displays the country's most celebrated artists, alongside budding new talent. Downstairs, Mission's casual style menu changes with the seasons. A tasty a tasty new menu has been created to feature robust, home-style fare with a distinctly Mediterranean flavour.
Mission's menu boasts a signature house-made lamb pie, with smashed peas and tomato relish, an oven-roasted spiced chicken with spinach, roast garlic and grilled lemon, and the famous Merguez sausage with slow cooked capsicum and onion with flat bread. There are other tempting options for every palette and mood including our daily specials.
Our take away service includes both our lunchtime take away menu, our outside catering menu and our a la carte menu. We also offer an outside catering facility with platters of delectable sandwiches, antipasto and nibbles. Please enquire.
Saturday breakfast - Piera Potter's homemade churros - spanish pastry with thick hot chocolate are a must, along with the rice pudding with soaked raisins and honey and a wild mushroom frittata with sage, oregano and garlic. Parking on Saturday is a breeze!
A cocktail happy hour is now in place. Why not pop in to Mission for one or two cocktails, between 5-7pm, Tuesday to Saturday and enjoy a complimentary cocktail for your guest - Just mention this offer!
Mission is also pleased to announce that NG Art Gallery and Mission's unique spaces are available for private functions. Whether it's a boardroom lunch, business conference, cocktail party or even a birthday celebration, don't hesitate to contact us with your requirements. A function menu is available for viewing.
Says Piera Potter of Mission: "The style is best described as warm and friendly, spiced up by a touch of bohemia. We encourage people to pick and choose from any part of the menu, as we want people to feel at home here. We are eager to create the ideal place to discuss work or put the world to rights, or even to sketch out that new masterpiece."
As Sydney City Mission did before them, Potter and Ginsberg's philosophy is to create an inviting second home for patrons - a meeting place, a place to eat and drink, and to share thoughts and ideas.
Also following the example set by their historical predecessors, there is a commitment to altruistic endeavours. NG Art Gallery's first exhibition. 'There is No Place Like Home' was opened by Sydney Morning Herald Art Critic John McDonald and featured the work of celebrated artists alongside graduates of Mission Australia's Creative Youth Initiative Program. A percentage of proceeds from tri-yearly themed exhibitions such as this will go to local charities.
"Mission serves a dual purpose. We are keen to encourage young Australian artists and to promote established artists to an audience of greater diversity," said Ginsberg today. "We hope to create a natural synergy between art and food, whilst maintaining the integrity of a traditional gallery space."
With changing exhibitions every three weeks, featuring acclaimed artists, Mission and NG Art enhances Chippendale's reputation as the new gallery precinct; and addresses a problem that both visitors and residents face - the lack of a quality local eatery.
