The combined passions of renowned art dealer Nicky Ginsberg and award-winning restaurateur Piera Potter have created one of Sydney's most tantalising new ventures of recent times - Mission.
Mission is aptly named for the Sydney City Missionaries who first occupied the 19th Century building. A spectacular Gothic Revival-style church in Sydney's Chippendale, the space has been remodelled by architect Jason Blake to perfectly accommodate Ginsberg and Potter's feast of sensory pleasure.
Upstairs, Ginsberg's NG Art Gallery displays the country's most celebrated artists, alongside budding new talent. Downstairs, Mission's casual style menu changes with the seasons. A tasty menu has been created to feature robust, home-style fare with a distinctly Mediterranean flavour.
Mission's menu boasts a signature house-chicken & mushroom pie, with smashed peas and chunky tomato relish, a confit of duck with braised lentils, beetroot relish & candied orange and the famous Berkshire pork sausages with chicory & fennel compote. There are other tempting options for every palette and mood including our daily specials.
Our take away service includes both a lunch & dinner take away menu, an outside catering menu and an a la carte menu. We also offer an outside catering facility with platters of delectable sandwiches, antipasto and nibbles. Please enquire.
Saturday brunch - Piera Potter's homemade churros - Spanish pastry with thick hot chocolate are a must, along with the poached fruits with Moroccan spice & mascarpone and scrambled eggs with braised field mushrooms & sage. Parking on Saturday is a breeze!
A cocktail happy hour is now in place. Why not pop in to Mission for one or two cocktails, between 5-7pm, Tuesday to Saturday and enjoy a complimentary cocktail for your guest - Just mention this offer!
Mission is also pleased to announce that NG Art Gallery and Mission's unique spaces are available for private functions. Whether it's a boardroom lunch, business conference, cocktail party or even a birthday celebration, don't hesitate to contact us with your requirements. A function menu is available for viewing.
Says Piera Potter of Mission: "The style is best described as warm and friendly, spiced up by a touch of bohemia. We encourage people to pick and choose from any part of the menu, as we want people to feel at home here. We are eager to create the ideal place to discuss work or put the world to rights, or even to sketch out that new masterpiece."
As Sydney City Mission did before them, Potter and Ginsberg's philosophy is to create an inviting second home for patrons - a meeting place, a place to eat and drink, and to share thoughts and ideas.
Also following the example set by their historical predecessors, there is a commitment to altruistic endeavours. NG Art Gallery continues to support charities with exhibitions such as There is No Place Like Home (Mission Australia), Fragile Planet (Australian Conservation Foundation), Food for the Future (Oz Harvest) and Waiting - A Still Life (MS Research Australia) to name but a few. A percentage of proceeds from these tri-yearly themed exhibitions such as this will support these charities and more.
"Mission serves a dual purpose. Our Feast for the Senses dinners every three weeks with high profile guest speakers and A New Dimension In Art Workshops encourage greater exposure and cultural diversity. Furthermore, we are keen to encourage young Australian artists and to promote established artists to a broader audience" said Ginsberg today. "We hope to create a natural synergy between art and food, whilst maintaining the integrity of a traditional gallery space."
With changing exhibitions every three weeks, featuring acclaimed artists, Mission and NG Art enhances Chippendale's reputation as the new gallery precinct; and addresses a problem that both visitors and residents face - the lack of a quality local eatery.
